The staff member who checked us in was very friendly, made us feel at home right away, and gave helpful recommendations. We appreciated the chats. We also felt safe and valued, including through the Accor loyalty recognition: a room upgrade, welcome cookies, and drinks at the restaurant. Mama Shelter is a small, artsy hotel up the hill in Santa Teresa, with uniquely designed rooms. Our room, 104, was spacious and individually styled. The bed was super comfortable, and we liked having two showers and two wash basins, though all of them drained very slowly. The window shutters took a little getting used to if you wanted daylight, but they suited the hotel’s style. The complimentary water was much appreciated. Breakfast had a fairly small selection compared with other Accor hotels, but the food seemed made with care, like freshly baked bread and juice in glass bottles with handwritten labels. That felt right for the hotel’s style and intended guests. The breakfast room also serves as a restaurant for locals, and we enjoyed dinner there one evening. There were deck chairs and showers for sunbathing, a foosball table, ping pong, and seating areas throughout the property, which made it cozy and easy to chat with other guests. We liked the “Mama” wordplay and the gift shop, and even bought a “Yo Mama” shirt. Walking there from central Rio is doable and worth doing at least once, but quite tiring. The drive is definitely bumpy.
We didn’t stay here, though I have serious FOMO because it looks great. We stopped by for breakfast, and the buffet was excellent, with an egg station and tapioca pancakes you could order. There was a really good spread, a lovely atmosphere, and friendly staff. We’d definitely stay next time we’re in Rio. Santa Teresa seems like a great area, and I’d love to explore it more.
The views are great, and the hotel area generally stays quiet during Carnival, even with Blocos all over the place. There’s a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights. The rooms have a beautiful industrial-chic look, and the restaurant has great food at good prices. The drinks menu is good too, with a couple of seriously good beers. It’s right in the middle of Santa Therese, a bohemian local area with friendly people and little shops. Gloria is the closest metro station. Just be warned that Santa Theresa is built on a hill, so walking everywhere can get rough after a few days.
That Santa Teresa location is hard to beat, and the big windows made the most of Rio's gorgeous sunlight. I really enjoyed my stay at Mama Shelter. The room was small, but having a balcony just outside gave me some extra space. The staff were very friendly, and the warehouse-style lounge, restaurant, and performance space was awesome. Highly recommend it for a trip to Rio!
My wife and I stayed at Mama Shelter on our honeymoon, and we'd happily recommend it. The restaurant was incredible, with tasty food and great service, and the hotel has a really hip design. Santa Teresa is lively and artsy too. Wow, Mama really does know best.
