Mirasol Copacabana Hotel

After leaving a terrible hotel, we were relieved to find Mirasol Copacabana Hotel so enjoyable. The staff were warm and always ready to help, which is what really made it stand out. We also loved the rooftop deck and bar, and the breakfast was a highlight. The location is great and the price felt like good value. We'd happily stay here again next time we're in Rio.

The rooms were neat and clean, and everyone on staff was really friendly. We had a great time staying here in Copacabana and would come back when we're in town again.

We were in Rio as a group, with people split between three nearby hotels at similar prices. Mirasol was the middle-priced one, but it came off the worst in our comparison. The hotel feels past its prime, with staff belongings stored wherever they can find space, even around the lobby, which makes the place unwelcoming. The rooftop is in poor, dirty shape, and the gym equipment up there is badly worn. I wouldn't go into the sauna, even in a full-body suit, because of hygiene concerns. Our room was passable, but upkeep seemed limited to the bare minimum. The shower swung between boiling and ice cold, and the walls were so thin we could hear guests in other rooms on the same floor talking. Breakfast looked like the cheapest wholesale ingredients they could find. On our last day, after four fully paid nights, we asked to leave our bags there after checkout and were told it would cost 20 BRL. The amount wasn't the point. Charging for that felt disgusting and showed little understanding of what hospitality should be. We wouldn't return.

It's close to the beach, and our stay was positive overall. The breakfast was pretty good, though the juices were watered down. The front desk staff didn't speak much English, and one man tried to scam us when we exchanged money. It's a decent hotel, but by North American standards I wouldn't call it four-star.
