The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, with a good shower and air conditioning, both much needed in Rio's summer. Check-in could have been clearer about arrival times. I felt awkward arriving half an hour after the estimate I'd given, since the receptionist kept saying she wouldn't normally be working then during the holidays and was there only because we were arriving. There was nobody on site after 6 p.m., so guests are left to manage on their own if something comes up. Breakfast cost extra and wasn't worth it. The combo was listed at R$45 but we were charged R$55 for a basic meal: one slice of sourdough with scrambled eggs, a decent serving of yogurt and fresh fruit, and a nice cold mate. The coffee was extremely bitter, apparently from using far too much coffee powder. The tapioca, at R$32, was damp, bland, and poorly seasoned. The cappuccino was just about acceptable, like a capsule espresso with milk, and not worth R$16.

During Carnival, they charged 2,800 BRL a night for a basic room that felt more like a hostel in comfort and standards. The staff were dismissive and condescending, even telling me I should “go to a hostel,” which was ironic given how this place feels. There was no sense of professionalism or care for guests, just contempt and opportunism. If you want to be overcharged and looked down on, stay here. Otherwise, keep away.

Antoineta was so helpful, and I loved staying here. The room was beautiful, and it's only a quick walk to the lively main part of Santa Teresa, with plenty of good food spots and bars. The street art nearby is beautiful too. One of my favorite breakfasts 😋

I really enjoyed the art-filled rooms and the high ceilings, which made this place feel special. My room was roomy, quiet, and cozy, and even the doors had lovely detailed designs. The cafe had a quirky feel, and I got to have a few drinks there, though it wasn't always open, so check the hours first. Having an art gallery in the same building was a nice bonus. The staff were very friendly and helpful, even though they spoke only a little English. There was a dedicated security team, and I felt okay walking around the campus during the day and at night, while still taking normal precautions. Mosquitoes were the one small problem. Repellent didn't stop me getting bitten, and mosquito nets would have helped. I'd recommend this to anyone after a distinctive, cool place to stay.

Santa Teresa has loads going on and feels so lively. Lorena kindly gave me a full rundown of places to visit and things to do, and I even bought a beautiful artwork from the gallery attached to the home. At Modernistas, the hosts are welcoming, the rooms spacious and well equipped, and breakfast was always tasty and worth it if you want to start your day early. A few tips from me: bring a filtering water bottle, use as much Portuguese as you can, and be ready to order Uber Blacks. Thanks for a great stay! ❤️
