For $1000 a night, we expected much better. By European or North American standards, sadly, this wouldn't count as a five-star hotel. Room cleaning was appalling and inconsistent. Some days the room was cleaned, other days it wasn't. Sometimes they'd take the bathroom towels and not replace them, even though I always hung them up because I wanted to reuse them and save water. Soap was just as unpredictable: some days they replaced used soap, other days they didn't. The shower curtain was black along the bottom and looked like it hadn't been changed in years. The room phone didn't work either. The amenities were unpredictable too. The gym might be open, or they might keep it closed for a few days, or open it much later than usual. The same went for the pool and other amenities. You never know when things will change, with no warning. I didn't feel safe because things weren't being handled properly or by the book. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone. Rio is spectacular, and Brazilians are so welcoming and full of joy and life. They deserve better representation than this hotel.

The managers did try to help, and at least worked with me on a refund after what was a torturous stay. Still, the hotel nearly wrecked my New Year's, and I don't recommend it. It claims to be a luxury hotel, which might seem true from the outside, but getting there by cab or Uber is a nightmare. I waited 30 to 60 minutes each time. My room also stayed around 26 degrees C the whole time because of air conditioning problems. Front desk staff were snooty and generally unresponsive, and check-in took up to 40 minutes because they were very understaffed. The taxi service out front made fun of me to my face when I balked at their ridiculous rates.

The room had amazing views, and the hotel was very nice and worked well for us while we attended a nearby conference. The bathroom could use an update. It's not in a great spot for nightlife or going out from the hotel.

We ran into some issues on arrival because of recent traffic changes in the area. The hotel's Convention Center, though, was spacious, clean, and well organized, with a big stage and hall. A great setup for social or business events.

I stayed here for a congress, and the meeting spaces were nice, with a good variety of atmospheres. The lunch buffet was fine. Getting here has also become much easier with the new Metro line.
