Shamanic Home

The place itself was comfortable, clean, and well set up, but what made my last days in Rio special was the atmosphere and the people. I was traveling alone and had a rough, exhausting time switching hostels because of problems at other places. Finding Shamanic home at the end of the trip turned into one of my best memories there. Gio greeted me with guitar music and was warm, generous, and helpful to everyone staying at Shamanic. He brought a happy, positive energy to the house. His wife Anna was lovely too. There’s a private room and a dorm for a few people, and the social side was still great. Everyone was friendly and respectful, and I met some cool people to explore Rio with. Gio felt like both a caring dad and a friend. He walked with me to find an ATM that worked and a laundry place open on Sunday. When I slept through my first morning after the bedbug chaos at my previous hostel, he thoughtfully closed the dorm curtains for me. He also shared the natural Aloe plants he’d bought when some of us got sunburned. The two adorable, friendly kitties were lovely company as well. Whenever someone left, Gio would play guitar and sing them off right up to the last minute. I had a really good rest there and was reluctant to go. Shamanic is in a nice apartment building with guards on a pleasant street, close to Ipanema beach and a few minutes’ walk from the metro. The dorm bathroom was one of the best and roomiest I’ve seen. The room has AC, a fan, big windows, and curtains that block the light completely. The kitchen is nicely equipped. I’m back home now and still think about this good friend in Rio. Don’t miss a chance to meet Gio before leaving. He can share great Rio cultural experiences. And if he recommends something, give it a try. I wasn’t sure about a private tour of Favela Rochina with a local guide he suggested, since I prefer exploring on my own. It turned out great: the guide was from Rochina, knew it best, and was passionate about showing people his neighborhood and helping his community. Dear Gio, I miss you and Shamanic a lot.
