The pool was cold and barely used, and the place felt so lifeless that most of the people I met left early. I was also robbed three times during my stay, which left me feeling unsafe. When I asked for part of my money back through Booking and in person, they refused, so I paid for the full two weeks even though I left early. The hostel was dirty, and the welcome was awful. Nobody speaks English, so it was hard to communicate about anything. I needed internet to work and only discovered after booking that there was no WiFi. I ended up buying three SIM cards. Things were badly organized: the breakfast and bar seemed to open at random, perhaps once every three days. The cleaning staff would clear out the fridges and throw away food without warning, and guests weren't told how things worked. There was one mirror on each floor for around 26 people, with no proper lighting, so getting ready or shaving was difficult. There's also a cat in the hostel, which isn't mentioned anywhere, so people with allergies should be careful. This place was a huge disappointment and spoiled part of my trip. Just two streets away, I found a much better hostel with a friendly team, working WiFi, a good atmosphere, and a welcome drink. That mattered far more than a pool that was no use. If you still want to try this place, I'd book only a short stay first.
The location and staff were the best parts, and they arrange tours at a fair price and store luggage for free. The kitchen also has everything you need, though it and the shared toilet were dirty much of the time. I paid more than the stay was worth. My nine-bed dorm had three-level bunks, and whenever someone on the top bunk got up, everyone seemed to wake. The bed was shaky, the rooms had mold, and the beds were uncomfortable. Maybe I caught it at a bad time, but the other guests felt odd and much older than people I've met at other hostels. I didn't like the atmosphere and wouldn't stay overnight there again.
That room was unbelievably gross, smelled of mold, and felt like a basement. I paid 440 reals a night for a private room, 880 reals total, and it was both the worst and most expensive room I had in all Brazil. This was the first hostel I visited in rio. Do your research first, there are better places.
The WiFi is terrible, and the private beach-house room's toilet smells, so keep that in mind. Still, the hotel's area feels really safe and you don't feel in danger. If I come back to Rio, I'd definitely stay here again.
The location is great, with a nice pool and hammocks, and most of the staff were friendly and helpful. One night receptionist, though, was shockingly rude. The rooms felt cramped with nine people trying to move around. They also had some charges that felt unnecessary and hidden, including borrowing a towel and keeping luggage after checkout. The AC wasn't allowed on during the day, when the room was hottest.
