The condo I rented had been renovated properly, and the rooms were comfortable. The place itself is nice and decent. The front desk staff were helpful, so I have no complaints about them. The restaurant service was a different story: only one person I dealt with was willing to help. On my last day, I asked a waiter if he could make an Irish coffee. He said no. I asked if he knew what it was and explained how to make one, but he still said no. I asked whether he could prepare anything if I told him how, and again he said no. When I asked if there was anything he could do, he said no once more. I was polite and friendly the whole time. This kind of interaction with the waiters seemed to be the norm, apart from the one helpful person. My Portuguese isn’t perfect, but I can hold a conversation and exchange ideas, so I don’t think language explains it. As in many places in Rio, the service felt below par, and maybe that’s why Brazil’s tourist industry is too. I think this is a broader service attitude in Rio, and why many tourists spend their money elsewhere. A pity.

An absolute joke. It felt like a miserable prison, and the staff treated me like an inmate. Why would anyone want to live this way? I was stuck there for five nights and wanted to leave after just one.

Terrible. Parking on the street is very hard to find, and the hotel has several spaces out front that could be made available. For no apparent reason, they keep them closed.

This is the worst place I’ve ever stayed, and I haven’t even been here two hours. I’m in Rio for work and got to the hotel late at night hoping to rest, but there’s no water to shower or even brush my teeth.
