I had the time of my life staying here years ago. This hostel helped me fall in love with Salvador's city and culture. When I returned to Salvador this year, I found it had closed, and it felt like visiting an important part of my past. I asked a local about someone who used to work there; he didn't know the former staff member I meant, but he remembered the owner, Francisco. Good luck with whatever comes next, Francisco. You ran a great hostel. -Marisa
The beds are set up to give you privacy, almost like having your own little room, and the place was 100% clean. They even serve eggs at breakfast. The staff are amazing, especially Adele at reception. Easily the best hostel I've stayed in so far :)
The place was extremely clean, and the dorm beds were wide, comfortable, and arranged so you almost felt like you had a private room. The staff were very nice, but the Wi-Fi wasn't great. We were told the downstairs bathroom worked, but it didn't, so we had to go up to the second floor.
Carlos, the owner, was amazing and happy to help with any questions. In the evenings he often takes guests out and shows them around the city. The hostel has a shared kitchen with free drinking water, plus a nice rooftop terrace where people can sit together. The rooms are clean and cozy too. I can definitely recommend Açai hostel for a stay in Salvador!
This was one of the worst places I've ever stayed. The photos don't match what you find there. I booked a room for six, but on arrival we were split between different rooms because they said they'd overbooked. That wasn't nice, but we accepted it. The next night, though, someone was sleeping in my bed, and the staff had taken all my things out. When I challenged them, they said their system showed my bed as free, even though I'd checked in less than 24 hours earlier. While I was trying to sort it out, another staff member rudely cut in and asked, "Are you trying to show us how to run our business?" I don't recommend staying there. The rooms smell of mold, and my friends who were put in separate rooms didn't have a key or a locker.
