Hotel London Santarem

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the restaurant food was good value. Breakfast was an excellent, generous buffet. There's a nice ice cream shop next door, with a couple of vegan options. The hotel is right by the river, with clean, comfortable rooms reached by lift. The restaurant and bar are upstairs, though you have to climb two short flights of stairs to get there. There are two reception areas: one beside a small plaza across the road that runs parallel to the Amazon, and another higher up at the restaurant level. That plaza has a view over the Amazon and a few old cannons, which explains the name " Fortaleza ". There's also a wooden tower and some truly revolting public toilets, though luckily you won't need to use them. The large, flat paved roof has a couple of tables and chairs that may or may not be there, and the views are good. Across from the hotel, a pier has a big restaurant and gift emporium. You can arrange a boat trip up the Amazon there and see different kinds of birds and animals, including sloths and monkeys. The boatmen we used were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.
