Republica is run down, dirty, and feels unsafe, so I’d choose Vila Madalena, Vila Olympia, or Jardin Paulista instead. The building itself is new and nice, with a gym, coworking space, and a small rooftop pool and terrace overlooking the city. Many units are rented through AirBNB. The reception and security staff are very strict. You can’t enter before check-in, and after checkout you can’t stay to work or even wait for a taxi. It feels needlessly rigid, though they’re following their instructions. If you need an early check-in or late checkout, arrange it with your host ahead of time.

The building is secure, and the staff are decent and friendly. It’s clean, and most things seem to work well. I haven’t tried the sauna yet. The sewer smell in the bathroom bothers me quite a bit, even though it isn’t overwhelming and seems common in developing countries. I’m more sensitive to smells. I’m also concerned about the artificial fragrance in the elevators, since it could be a respiratory hazard for people with asthma or serious chemical sensitivities. I hope they’ll consider a natural alternative. Outside, dog poop on the sidewalks and the amount of homelessness in this district are upsetting. During a short walk with my wife, a beggar bothered us, right outside a store with security, which was frustrating. I know the pandemic made things much worse, and I hope the government does more social work and outreach. There are a lot of good, decent people in this country, and I hope churches or others can help people get back on their feet. If you have a vehicle or plan to use Uber or a taxi to get around other districts, and won’t rely on walking alone, these neighborhood issues may be less of a concern.
