We stayed for three nights as a backpacker couple, and it turned out better than we first expected. The neighborhood is handy, with shops and restaurants nearby, and Santana metro is an easy walk away. Wi-Fi worked really well, and the lights, power, and hot water worked most of the time. Inside, things were clean and orderly, with no strong bad smells. A friendly staff member gave us a three-bed dorm to ourselves, which was kind, though it was so tiny that there was barely room for our bags. I can’t imagine fitting three people in there comfortably. Check-in took about 20 minutes because nobody was around at first, but the staff member who arrived was friendly. The building looked a little run down, and there wasn’t much of a social vibe. An old dog barked sometimes. I’d recommend it to easygoing budget travelers who don’t mind a very small room.

In all my stays at budget hostels, this was the first one I left in a hurry. The room had mold across the walls, peeling paint, and things in poor shape, but what made me leave was finding the room crawling with bedbugs after I lay down on the mattress. There were so many that I couldn’t overlook it. The “caretaker” acted as if he had never seen one before. The whole place felt like nobody cared. Avoid it.

Karla, the owner, is great, and the service was very good. The hostel is clean, in a convenient spot close to Santana metro, and the area felt safe to walk around at night. There’s also a great breakfast to get the day started.

Santana Hostel is in a lovely, peaceful spot, and the owner is friendly. I recommend it.

The room was dirty and the triple bunk was cramped. Under the bed was disgusting, and when I dropped my phone, a bug that looked like a tick crawled onto my hand. I turned on my flashlight and saw lots of bedbugs. There was a bad smell upstairs, and the bathroom cleanliness depended on each person. The place felt unhealthy. Doors and gates were left open, so anyone from the street could get in easily, and there was no reception. This was the worst hostel experience I’ve had.
