The common room often felt more like staff space than a guest area. Several staff members were sleeping on the sofas during our four-night stay, and it seemed as though many of them lived there. I understand night shifts can be tough, but surely someone on duty should be awake? We also saw people smoking by the door to the common area and making noise well past 10 pm, even though guests are asked to sign rules against smoking on the premises and loud noise after 10. We weren't sure, but some of them looked like they might have worked at the hostel. Some staff were polite and patient with us as English speakers. Others came across as rude. Once, after we returned from a day out, we were met with hostility over confusion about laundry. When my companions and I went to the desk to speak with the staff member, they gestured for us to move back as if we were ill. The rooms had a serious black mold problem. Our bedding was damp and affected by it, and the smell was obvious. The rooms were poorly ventilated, and the air conditioning didn't work, which probably didn't help. A Hostelworld review from two years earlier mentioned the same issue, so it clearly hadn't been fixed. We felt unwelcome by a lot of people during our four nights there. Maybe it was the language barrier, which is understandable, or maybe because we were only staying briefly. Either way, the atmosphere felt very odd. They seem to have long-term and returning guests.

At 650 Brazilian Reais for 12 nights, this was a good option for groups of 4 to 8 people. There's a ping-pong room with music and seating, along with a large kitchen, dining room, and living area. The sleeping space has roomy single and double beds set into concrete bunks for privacy, plus large metal lockers. Laundry on site costs 30 reais.

The common room and kitchen have plenty of space, though I wish they had better kitchen utensils. The sleeping area is roomy and has its own light and plug. The outlet for my locker didn't work, though I don't know if that was just mine. The location is nice, within walking distance of Batman alley. There are hills to walk up and down, but that's generally how São Paulo is.

The dorm was dirty too, and never got cleaned. It makes me wonder whether the sheets were ever changed. During our four-night stay, the bathroom was never cleaned, even after we asked staff. The bin stayed full, there was no toilet paper, and the shower was gross. Someone also spilled beer in the dorm and left it there. I asked the manager for something to clean it up, expecting him to offer to handle it. He handed me some paper leaflets to soak it up and went back to watching TV. We arrived in the morning after a bus ride of more than 12 hours. Our dorm beds were ready, but we were still charged extra for early check-in. I've never experienced that before. I wish I could give this place no stars, but I have to give it one.

The staff were very nice, and the beds were amazingly comfortable, set into stone-looking walls. There's a large kitchen area where you can work. But the keycard fee is a lot: lose the plastic card and they charge 50 reales ($10 usd). Other hostels just make a duplicate or a new card, and people don't always return them. The bathroom faucet keeps shutting off and dripping onto your feet. The floors are rusty and need cleaning, and there was a bar towel by the bed. Wifi is super slow. It's a very quiet area, but getting back to busier streets means walking up a giant hill.
