I booked a room for September several months ahead, then spent days without an answer to my emails or WhatsApp calls and messages. There wasn't even an automatic reply saying they were away or would respond within 24 hours. Before I had arrived, I was already worried they wouldn't be reachable if I needed help during the stay. That made the idea of a relaxing vacation feel like the opposite. It took posting this review for the hotel to email me. Andre, the owner, ignored my cancellation message and didn't offer an apology or a convincing promise this wouldn't happen again. During business hours the next day, I again asked for my deposit back by email, phone, and WhatsApp. The owner seemed able to respond when it suited him, but the hotel's handling of this didn't seem to concern them. I was frustrated, and glad I had time to book somewhere else. They eventually agreed to cancel the reservation and return the deposit. In America, there's a saying that when people show you who they are, believe them. From the booking problems onward, I felt they weren't interested in helping guests, and I took that as a sign. This behavior was completely unacceptable. Avoid.

The hotel has a beautiful Brazilian style, with materials from Bahia throughout, and the stone-lined pool stays warm all day, even late in the afternoon. I also loved the architecture and design. The suite was very comfortable, nicely decorated and fragrant, with exceptionally good bed and bath linens. Breakfast and afternoon tea were among the best I've had, with a varied, regional menu that added something special to the Trancoso experience. The team at Aysú deserves a lot of credit. Everyone was polite, kind, and eager to help. Special thanks to Débora, Ana, Vanessa, Thiago, and Eli for making our six days feel like a real experience. Reception replied quickly on WhatsApp, booked things, suggested tours and transfers, and took care of arrangements, which makes a big difference on vacation. The hotel restaurant was good, and its prices seemed fair compared with the Quadrado, though portions in Trancoso felt modest at every restaurant we visited. I did have three drawbacks. The location is far from both the beach and the Quadrado. There are transfers at two scheduled times to Praia dos Nativos and Praia dos Coqueiros, but a taxi to the Quadrado cost us 100 reais for about 3 km, 50 each way. Trips to more distant beaches would cost even more. The Wi-Fi was unstable, so anyone working remotely should have a backup connection. And although the gym is great, there was no drinking fountain or water station, which is hard to imagine in Bahia's heat. Without those three issues, I'd have given it five stars.

Our room was wonderful, with a great view, and housekeeping was attentive and helpful. The cook deserves a special mention too. The breakfast cakes and breads were beautifully made with care. The hotel is clean, leafy, well organized, and has great facilities. We enjoyed the pool and fitness area, and the gym equipment is professional grade for anyone who likes to work out while traveling. The service was excellent and made our time in Trancoso even better.
