The bathroom smelled, the pillows and pool were dirty, and cargo trains kept passing through the night just 100m away. Breakfast was baked beans with liver, eggs, and toast. This was the worst and most expensive place we stayed in Botswana. There aren’t many alternatives in the area, though, so if you have a choice, don’t stay here.

Some rooms have beautiful rocks to admire. Mateo lodge sits among the hills and is a traditional tourist attraction. It’s in the village centre along the A1 road, 200km from Gaborone and 230km from Froncistown. A lovely place to stay.

The Wi-Fi was poor, but the rooms were clean and the staff welcoming. It’s quiet and cosy, and good enough if you need somewhere to rest and work. I wasn’t expecting a 5 star experience.

It works for a simple overnight stop. The goods train tracks are very close, though, and there was a lot of train traffic that evening. It was loud.

The place is run down, and it wasn’t clean. Basic things were missing, electrical equipment didn’t work, and the air conditioners were out too.
