The setting is the best part: right on the Thamalakane river bank, with the water less than a minute’s walk away. There’s a gorgeous garden and picnic area, a swimming pool, and a spot to braai meat overlooking the river. It’s all tent accommodation apart from reception, and it’s self-catering, with pots and a stove provided. Staff were reasonable and accommodating. Shops are only 5km away, but this is a residential area, not the bush. WiFi is available, though the signal gets very weak away from reception. I checked in but didn’t stay overnight. There were lots of mosquitoes and flies, the shower water by the tent smelled bad, and inside the tent there was a strong, stuffy mosquito-repellent smell. That wasn’t the great outdoors camping experience I know and like, and the smells and shower area put me off. They charged a 40% cancellation fee on the cost of one night, which wasn’t too bad. I’d recommend the place for a picnic, garden, or braai event.

The staff were super helpful, and I had a great night’s sleep. There’s a nice river view, with birds, hippos, and sunsets. It’s the closest backpackers to town, about a 25-minute walk to supermarkets, and the most affordable. Nice kitchen and free WiFi, too.

Hippos right outside in the lake, a great view of the night sky, and really comfortable beds. This is a fantastic hostel, with excellent facilities, a kitchen for cooking, and a helpful family of staff always around when you need them.

The worst experience of my life. I can’t rate it, it should be minus 5. Dirty, rotten swimming pool, and unsafe. It isn’t a campsite at all, with no camping spots and no electricity points.
