The setting is lovely, a rustic lodge in beautiful gardens overlooking the river, and the staff were friendly and professional throughout. Still, we didn't think the experience justified the price. There was no air conditioning, and the only dining choice was a buffet that was decent but felt expensive for what it was. We've travelled widely in Africa and elsewhere, and the value came in below what we'd expected.

The river setting and sunset were lovely, and we had a pleasant two-night stay at Thamalakane River Lodge. Dinner brought some confusion one evening over whether we'd ordered the “whole” dinner or just the main, so our soup came after the main course. The location is a bit remote, and service felt odd: there were lots of employees around, but they often seemed focused on their phones. Construction was going on while we were there, which made it rather loud. The “two” pools were amusing, though neither looked new or renovated.

The owner really went out of their way to help us get back things we'd left behind, which we appreciated so much. The hotel was spotless, the food delicious, and the views breathtaking. Hospitality was wonderful and the location stunning. They also said a padel court is opening soon. Highly recommended.

Watching the sun go down over the river was magical, and spotting the 3 resident hippos felt like a real bit of African romance. But the price was hard to justify: £640 for two adjoining rooms for 1 night, three times what we paid at another lovely Maun hotel. It wasn't bad, just a bit tired and not 5 star quality.

We visited in the rainy season and still had some great wildlife sightings. An amazing lodge, with outstanding staff. We'll be back!
