The rooms at Coningsby Inn are basic, but the showers have been renovated, the AC and WiFi work well, and we slept comfortably. It’s not a fancy place, though it made a good base for exploring Belize City, with the cathedral and plenty of other places within walking distance. The hotel is downtown, small, clean, and fairly priced. Best of all, the staff are friendly and happy to help.

We had good breakfast here, though it cost extra and wasn’t part of the room price. The room also had AC, but the owner told us to switch it off whenever we went out. Without it, a heavy mildew smell quickly filled the room, and there were mildew marks on the bedside table. The bathroom window was just rusty metal slats, with no glass or screen, so insects could come in. There was no hair dryer, mini fridge, or microwave either. The place felt badly run down, and the mattresses were extremely uncomfortable. The beds wobbled, and the bunk bed in our room had no ladder to get safely to the top. Linens were stained, didn’t match, and looked like they’d come from different places. Shower pressure was very low. Since our room was right under the dining area, we were woken by loud activity starting around 5:30-6:00 in the morning. I was traveling with a mission group and didn’t choose the lodging myself. I wouldn’t stay here again. The experience was closer to camping than comfortable accommodation, and I can’t recommend it. Avoid the room at the front of the inn.

The owner was lovely and easy to talk to when I met her. This is an old house turned into a hotel, and it has some charm. We were a group of 18 doing ministry work in the country, and the place was able to fit us all for our stay. It’s close to everything, and the streets are quiet at night. For more nightlife, you’ll have to cross town toward the casinos. The setup is very basic, better suited to a backpacker than someone expecting upscale amenities. You get a key and a bathroom with toilet paper, hand soap, and a shower. Watch the curtain, though, mine fell down a couple of times. There’s a TV and mini fridge too, so it’s a little like camping in a hotel.

The owners are great about answering questions and sharing local tips or places to check out. Rooms are decent, though they’re showing some wear. For a small business that had to get through covid and then the government's gold standard, the building is in good enough shape. The location puts you near the city's buzz while still in a quiet area, one block from the governor's house and another from the seaside. Wi-Fi works throughout the rooms and facilities. There’s a balcony upstairs, a kitchenette, and several places to sit by reception on the ground floor. For the price, it’s a great choice for a few days in the city.

I’m grateful they let us stay and had room for us just before the hurricane hit the country. But when the power went out, there was no AC, and many of us struggled with the heat. Why weren’t there generators to run fans or AC in an emergency? It made the stay really uncomfortable. After the hurricane, the next day, one worker, or maybe the owner, asked us to clear food out of the room we’d been moved from once our ride was already outside. We’d left that room because it flooded during an emergency, so cleaning it shouldn’t have been put on us after we were allowed to leave. When we checked downstairs, workers were already cleaning and told us not to worry because they were handling it. I won’t stay here again.
