Getting away from the city was part of the appeal, though the area has quite a few US expats. We chose the all-inclusive option since town is so far away, at $500 US a day. Belize has cheaper places, but staying here was a pleasure. The beach is beautiful, the staff are genuinely friendly and accommodating, and the food and wide choice of drinks were delicious. Our room was lovely too, though a little tired.

The ocean is right there, and the water stays shallow far out, so the tiny pool didn't matter much to us. We had an ocean view cabana that looked small outside but had plenty of room inside. Meals were fresh, farm-to-table style, rather than the usual mass-produced all-inclusive food, and the staff were welcoming and attentive. It's peaceful and remote, with no crowds or party scene, just what we wanted. One warning if you're heading to the Mayan Ruins: take bug spray. Those were the worst mosquitoes I've ever dealt with. We had an amazing trip, and I'd highly recommend the resort for a quiet getaway.

There are plenty of birds around, and the clean beach is lovely to spend time on. Bikes, kayaks, and the pool are included, which adds to the value. The grounds are lush and very well kept, set beside Orchid Bay in a secluded spot. Each casita is spacious enough for about six friends or family members, with a full kitchen, smart-screen TVs in the living room and bedroom, and a large screened porch.

The staff have mostly been here for years, and their kindness really shows. The food was very good, and they go out of their way to help. Dave even found me a phone charger for free when mine wouldn't charge, which saved me since town is 15 miles away. Jose showed me the condos for rent too. They felt like a nice US beach condo, while the side where I stayed had more of a traditional Caribbean feel. My accommodations were clean, there was plenty to do, and I had a nice few days. Would definitely recommend.

We only stopped by for the day, so I can't say what the hotel is like. The beach club itself was a nice little spot, with a bar and food and no entry fee. Imagine that in Bacalar...
