Auberge Godefroy

The rooms were the best part: modern, clean, and comfortable. We arrived expecting a much more relaxing stay, though, and the experience didn't live up to the branding or the price. The property felt more subdued and traditional than we had imagined, and the lobby wasn't especially welcoming. Photos made it look like a quiet spot in nature, but it's right beside a busy road and just off the highway. It also feels like the hotel could use an update. We booked dinner at Bistro Le Balzac, but the website didn't make it clear which restaurant we were choosing or how it differed from the main dining room. We ended up at the more casual one. Service there was disorganized and slow: our nachos took 45 minutes, nobody told us how long they'd take, and staff hardly checked on us or refilled our water. We later found out the restaurants share a kitchen and the main dining room gets priority. Our entrees came about 30 minutes after the appetizer, and the cocktails weren't very good. The spa also disappointed, particularly for the extra charge. It was mostly two outdoor hot tubs without a separate place to relax. The outdoor area wasn't supervised, people were using phones and taking pictures in the tubs, and young children were allowed in, which made it hard to feel like a spa. We made the most of the stay, but it fell short of what we'd expected.

A friend's uncle, who goes every year and enjoys the finer things, recommended Auberge Godefroy. I booked a room with two Queen beds through Expedia, but one of the Murphy-style beds was stuck in the wall and wouldn't come down. I reported it to the front desk twice, including after 7 p.m., about six hours after check-in, and nobody fixed it. The room seemed meant for four, since there were four bathrobes. The shower handle was covered in BLACK MOLD, which seemed like a serious health and safety issue. We stayed just one night, spoke with the manager on duty the next day, and got 20% off the room and taxes. After returning home, I developed an allergic reaction that I attributed to dirty jacuzzi water. I spent over $150 on prescription medicine and had to see my family physician after visiting an urgent care walk-in clinic, because the itchy, hive-like rash wasn't responding to over-the-counter antihistamines. I reported it to Expedia Canada, but they refused any further compensation despite my needing medical care. My advice is to avoid this property and/or Expedia.

We had a one-night layover and loved the dinner and atmosphere. The Seafood Platter with lobster tail was delicious, and the drinks were wonderful. The staff went out of their way to seat us and make sure we were fed, and everyone was friendly. The place has a lot to offer, including an indoor/outdoor heated pool, jacuzzi, sports gym, pub, fine dining, and spa. A real diamond in the rough. We'd happily recommend this Auberge and definitely plan to come back.

We enjoyed the pools and outdoor area, and the food was very good. We were meant to eat on the Terrace, but even a short rain shower meant it was cancelled, so staff moved us to the Balzac bar. The room was clean and quiet, though quite humid. Our towels and swimsuits were still wet the next morning. It's a nice place, but the room layouts, especially the bathrooms, are showing their age.
