Quality Inn & Suites High Level

We left after trying two rooms, then stayed somewhere else. In the first room, the comforter was stained, the fridge leaked, and the room smelled like stale smoke. My husband needs to keep medication cold, so after we called about the fridge and waited without anyone coming, he went to the desk to ask for another room. The clerk had said he’d call maintenance, but it was 9:45 at night and we weren’t sure anyone was working that late. The second room smelled of smoke too, and there was a dead bug on the bed. When I called about it, the clerk said bugs were everywhere this time of year and another room would probably have them. We packed up and checked out. At checkout, he again said bugs were normal in the north and we’d have to deal with them. We live farther north than High Level, AB and know bugs happen, but we don’t expect one in a hotel bed. Brushing it off on top of the other problems was not okay with us. The first impression had been better: the front desk guy seemed nice and helpful when we checked in, though he talked about how much he wanted to finish work and get pizza from the onsite restaurant. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone.

Our room was clean and comfortable, with a fireplace, fridge, little table and chairs, and a couch. The staff at both the hotel and Stardust restaurant were friendly and polite. Even with the hotel full and the front desk busy, the clerk called our room within minutes to check that we were happy. I highly recommend it.

The rooms were clean, but basic, and $180 a night didn’t feel justified. We were also charged $40 more per room than the rate quoted over the phone, and our booking for three double rooms and one single had been changed to three singles and one double. I called at 7 AM to book directly for that same night, and the quoted price fit our work budget. Nobody mentioned the 24-hour cancellation policy during the call. When our plans unexpectedly changed, we called right away to cancel and were told we’d be charged in full because notice had to be given a full day ahead. That hasn’t been a problem at other hotels we’ve stayed at. I was very disappointed with the communication, the booking mix-up, and how our concerns were handled. After this stay, I won’t return to a Quality Inn property.

The room was very clean, and the breakfast buffet and atmosphere were excellent. Still, it felt more like a “motel” than we expected, and a neighbour who lived there knocked on our door asking for money.
