It’s a lovely heritage house with large, clean, nicely decorated rooms, plus a big wooded yard with a pool and sauna. We didn’t feel very welcome, though. I never learned the landlady’s name because she didn’t introduce herself, and it was hard to get a word in while she hurried through check-in and the orientation. Checkout felt much the same. She asked me to pay the room bill before we’d even finished breakfast. My wife found her bossy, and we left feeling like we were imposing. Maybe she was just having a bad day. I won’t go into more detail.

I absolutely love this bed and breakfast. The owners are welcoming and offer suggestions for things to do. The breakfast is excellent and healthy.

We stayed in the Annex this past week for some quiet time before the Christmas rush. It’s a small, separate building in the large, wooded backyard, with a rustic interior, a big king bed, loveseat, TV, fake fireplace, kitchenette, bathtub and shower, and bathrobes. The kitchenette has a microwave, mini fridge/freezer, kettle, coffeemaker, dishes, and cutlery. There’s a pool and sauna, but they were closed for winter. The property has a large parking lot with an electric charging station. It stretches back to the next block, where you can park and walk through the back to the front door. The back door is a private entrance. Myriam and Patrick were friendly, gave us discount coupons for nearby restaurants and cheese at the Abbey, and know the area and things to do very well. They’ve been in Magog for the past 12 years and speak English and French. Breakfast was filling: coffee or tea, a smoothie, then yogurt with fruit and granola or a fruit salad cup. The main dish was either a croissant with melted cheese, ham, apple, and salad, or an English muffin topped with eggs and cheese, hash browns, and salad. It ended with a small Persian sweet. The surroundings are peaceful and quiet, definitely not a party place. I felt like I was sleeping in the woods. It’s within walking distance of Main Street, restaurants, and the lakeside skating path between two parks. I was surprised the front of the building wasn’t lit with Christmas lights since it was nearly Christmas, though I saw the strings installed. At night I heard fluttering in the roof, so there could be bats in the Annex ceiling.

The host was incredibly friendly and helpful, and breakfast was delicious, with four courses. Our room was roomy, spotless, and nicely decorated with a theme. If you can, book the superior queen room with the jetted tub for two. Great value for the price.

The owners really go out of their way to make your stay lovely. We had a large room with a deck, and the pool was warm and open on September 30. Best breakfast of our whole road trip through Quebec. We’ll definitely be back!
