Auberge Chez Jean

This was my second New Year’s stay at the hostel, and I enjoyed it just as much as last year. The rooms are simple, clean, and warm, and the place has a wholesome community feel. Everyone was very nice. A big thank you to Christian, who was accommodating and helped us a lot during our stay! The location is handy too, within walking distance of food, bars, and shops. I love this place.

Once I arrived, everything went smoothly. The room was nice, and the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming. The woman working there was very helpful, showed me the parking, got me settled in, and answered all my questions. Before that, though, I tried calling several times and their phone was down. They also didn’t respond to my emails, calls, or messages, which was frustrating.

I booked through the website months ahead and paid the required $80 deposit, which the site says is refundable with advance cancellation. I decided to cancel an hour after booking, but there was no online cancellation option. I emailed to ask them to cancel and refund the deposit, then followed up two days later and got no reply either time. I wrote this review four days later. They finally responded and refunded me shortly after it was published, but it shouldn’t have taken two emails and four days.

If you’re on a budget and like to travel freely, Chez Jean is a good option. It’s a little rough around the edges, but the friendly staff and excellent location make it worth the price. The bathroom was clean, and the shower was refreshing, with great pressure and water quality. Thank you, Jean, you’re a gem for weary travellers looking for a place to stay 🫶 You do need to be comfortable roughing it a bit: the bunks have no curtains and there’s no lockbox for your belongings. There’s a cool spot at the back with red lights where you can roll joints and hang out. It has what you need if you’re good at making yourself at home wherever you end up.
