Hôtel Le Chablis

This small hotel feels more like a motel, and the room is clearly cheaper than what you’d get at an average 3 star place. Still, it did the job, and I’d stay again if I really needed somewhere during the busy season. It’s not bad when you’re in a pinch and need decent, lower-priced accommodation. Breakfast was really good, with all the things I’d expect from a free breakfast. The parking lot is tiny. The walls are thin, though I only heard people when they stomped. There was also a faint smoke smell, but only when someone nearby was smoking.

The room was attractive and did what we needed for sleeping, but it was the smallest I’ve ever stayed in. There wasn’t a flat surface to open a suitcase or set down anything bigger than a glass, and there wasn’t even a bathroom hook. We’d booked the cheapest comfort room. At arrival they offered us a suite at no extra charge, but it only had one bed. I appreciated the offer and the welcome tray of goodies. The front desk staff were more than helpful, though English was a bit of a problem and we managed to communicate. There’s no elevator, and getting to our room meant climbing lots of steps. Breakfast was outstanding, with bagels and lox. Staff said there weren’t any good restaurants nearby and suggested ordering from a takeout menu at the desk. We tried it and regretted it. The wonton soup was edible, but we threw everything else away.

It was a decent stay, though there were more cons than pros. Rue Sherbrooke seems to be the main street for getting to lots of other places. But the cigarette smell was overwhelming outside, in the main lobby, and in the hallways on every floor. That’s hard to believe for a smoke-free hotel with designated smoking areas. Hot breakfast was available only on weekends. On weekdays it was stale croissants and sliced bread, which wasn’t how it was presented online. I only found out when I went looking for breakfast on a weekday. Staff would see you waiting at the front desk and carry on as if you weren’t there, which felt very unprofessional. The ice machine never had a scoop, bathrooms had no hooks or rods for clothes, and the WiFi was so bad I had to use my own data the whole stay.

Karen at reception was so sweet and helpful, and all the workers were amazing. They brought us plenty of towels, cleaned daily, and left complimentary water. The metro is really close, which makes getting around Montreal easier. An amazing hotel for our first time in Quebec!
