The station itself can feel pretty scary at night. There are lots of homeless people, and sometimes you see drug-related behavior that many tourists aren't used to. In terms of subway access, though, it's one of the best locations: you can reach Chinatown and many of Montreal's cultural attractions from here.

The ticket machines have an English option, and there's also a ticket booth. The instructions are in French, but the end stations are clearly marked. The subway is cleaner than in NYC and Philadelphia.

In winter, the crowds make it hard for staff to keep Place d’Armes clean. Salt, slush, and grime build up, and it can feel like the cleaning schedule can't keep pace with the foot traffic. Still, its location is hard to beat, between Chinatown and the Old Port, and the station has useful spots attached, including coffee shops and a Burger King. It's convenient for a quick bite or a warm drink while exploring some of Montreal's most iconic neighborhoods, even if maintenance could use more attention in the colder months.

It's well placed, but the planning is awful. A month ago they closed a street, including a pedestrian area, and there's no word on when it'll reopen. This weekend they shut an entrance too. Why? Why not. The metro is a maze now, and the planning is all over the place.

There are plenty of maps on the walls, which is helpful. Just check which direction you're bound for, and make sure your destination is on that route.
