Alt Hotel Winnipeg

The conference meals arrived late and cold, and they were missing basic condiments. My room had no drawers, the shower door let water spill everywhere, and I jammed my finger in the door. The bedding wasn’t clean either, I found a blood stain on the duvet. Paying $21 a night for parking on top of the room rate is a joke. I was really disappointed. Winnipeg has plenty of good hotels, and this isn’t one of them.

For a central Winnipeg stay, Alt Hotel Winnipeg is handy for reaching the Canada Life Centre, shops, restaurants, and other popular spots. The rooms have a clean, simple look and come with Wi-Fi, a TV, air conditioning, and a workspace. There’s a fitness center, restaurant, and lounge, and pets are allowed. Staff were friendly and helpful. It’s a comfortable option for both business trips and sightseeing.

I picked this hotel for being close to the Burt, about two blocks away, and loved that my room looked right out over it. Tim Hortons is in the same building, with lots of restaurants, shops, and other places an easy walk away. The room was lovely, the bed comfortable, and the bathroom was huge with plenty of toiletries. It only had a shower stall, no tub, which suited me with a broken leg. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout. The one small annoyance was the entrance. The doors stay locked all day and night, and you have to tap a keycard on a box a couple of steps away. With my crutches, I couldn’t get inside before the doors closed again. Staff watched the door closely and almost always reopened it before I had to try a second time. A few more seconds before the doors shut could make things easier for people with disabilities.

The building and rooms looked fantastic, all modern, so I came in with high hopes. But the staff were unhelpful and condescending, and I felt dismissed and disrespected. I understand that hotels have policies, but there was no help or advice, and we were basically pushed away. We went to the Hampton inn instead and were really impressed by how kind, helpful, and respectful the staff were, and the rooms were wonderful. I wouldn’t choose the alt hotel again, ever.
