Alte Metzg - Hostel

They moved all our belongings to a different room without asking, including used underwear, a professional laptop, and backpacks with credit cards. Apparently, they had made a mistake when checking us in. We got an email saying our things had been moved and the building entrance code had changed. It said I could call if I wanted the new code. We were left outside the entrance for two hours before Manuela, the owner or person in charge, answered her phone. This is a crime and completely unprofessional, and the owner never acknowledged what happened. I called to ask her to reimburse us, but she never picked up again. The place is clean and decent, but don’t bring anything too valuable or private.

The kitchen was really convenient and fully furnished, and I liked the decor and atmosphere. I stayed two nights and loved it, and the shared bathroom was only shared with one other room, so it wasn’t troublesome at all. Everything was very clean. The mattress was too soft, though, and there was an extra blanket lying directly on the floor when I arrived in my room. I didn’t meet the owner or staff during my stay, which made it feel a bit impersonal, but they were very responsive by email. I’d definitely go again.

For an affordable stay in Appenzell, I’d definitely recommend this hostel. It felt more like a hotel than a hostel. My single room was clean and comfortable, and the shared bathrooms were surprisingly well kept. The self check-in was easy, and there’s a big, very clean kitchen and a common seating area.

The kitchen was the best I’ve experienced in similar accommodation, with all the essentials, including oil and vinegar. There were also drinks in the fridge to buy on the honor system. I stayed three nights and loved it. It was beautifully clean everywhere, and the location just across the bridge from the town center made it easy to get around on foot. Highly recommend.
