Ascona Lodge, Pool & Garden Retreat

The location looks a little out of the way, but frequent buses get you to Locarno in 15 minutes. I really liked the self-service setup: there's a bar open all night, food, free coffee and sparkling water. Breakfast was very good, they offer different pillows, and the outdoor pool is lovely.

We were here for five nights, and the staff were very attentive. The rooms are lovely and have a good en suite. Breakfast was very good, with all the usual options. We didn't try the restaurant, and although we didn't use the pool, other guests seemed to be enjoying it. You can walk to town easily, so it's a perfect place to stay in Ascona.

Getting into the center of Ascona doesn't take long. We liked the digital key and being able to check in digitally, which helps if traffic delays your arrival. The place is due to be renovated. Access to the elevator could be better, and the setup isn't ideal for wheelchair users.

This was my second stay at the Hotel Mulino, and it was even better than the first. The hotel has had an amazing refurbishment, and the staff are as lovely and accommodating as ever. Even the maids fold our clothes after making the beds. Our room had a huge balcony with stunning views, a walk-in wardrobe and a wet room with a modern shower. There are USB and USB-C charging points, so travel adaptors may not be needed. Breakfast is continental, as expected, with plenty of choice. We always ate outside at the marble tables overlooking the mountains. The outdoor pool is large and lovely, set in a garden with grass. There's a shower room, changing facilities and sun loungers with plenty of shade, which we needed at times. It's deep all the way around, so it's not recommended for young children who can't swim confidently. Adult supervision in the pool is a must. Our 12-year-olds loved it and didn't want to get out. The location works perfectly for us. It's a 10-minute bus ride from Locarno train station and a two-minute walk from the bus stop. The Ascona promanade is about an eight-minute walk away, with lots of different shops along the characterful little backstreets and alleyways. We've travelled all over Europe and stayed in many, many hotels. I can say 100% this is the best all-round hotel we've stayed at. 5* A1+
