Youth Hostel Basel

When we arrived at 23h30, our room’s toilet was dirty, with poop still in it. We raised it the next morning and got only a simple “sorry.” The breakfast was a joke, with almost nothing there and poor quality. We’d first paid 190 for a 4-bed room without a bathroom, which seemed like a good deal. Then my friend felt sick, so at check-in we upgraded to a 4-bed room with a bathroom. We were tired and didn’t think it through, but the upgrade was another 169, making 359 for one night in a room with one bunk bed and one regular bed. That’s honestly crazy. For that price, you can get two bedrooms in a 4-star hotel in the city. Don’t bother staying there.

I’m so grateful to the cleaning staff. I lost my jewellery at the hostel, emailed reception, and they got back to me. The cleaners had found it and held onto it until I could arrange for someone to pick it up. Thank you so much.

The staff were really professional, and breakfast starting at 6.00 am was handy for my early flight. I stayed three nights in a room for six in this surprisingly large hostel, set in an old, peaceful part of Basel. It’s a short walk to the Rhein river, Munster cathedral and Kunstmuseum tram station. At reception I got a Basel Card, which gave me free public transport and 50% off all museums. I liked the room and bed, and the lack of curtains didn’t bother me. The smart layout puts the personal lockers and sink behind wooden doors, away from the beds, which keeps noise down. Check-ins aren’t possible after 23:30, so you can sleep without late arrivals. Toilets and washrooms are in the hall on the same floor. You can buy souvenirs and an umbrella at reception too. I’ll definitely book here again when I return to Basel. Thank you, Hostel!

The common room downstairs could be better: it has plenty of chairs, but no soft, comfortable seats or sofas, and not many outlets for charging. The hostel itself has beautiful design, good service, and a quiet setting close to nature. Breakfast and the BaselCard, including FREE public transit, are part of the price, though that isn’t mentioned on the website!
