We only decided at the last minute to stop in Brig for a night on our way to Italy, but staying in this monastery turned guest house ended up being the highlight of our time in Switzerland. It has a charm and calm that's hard to match. I'm already planning another trip to Switzerland, mainly so I can return to Brig and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere here again.

The beautiful garden was the one thing I liked about the place. The Gästehaus had been presented to me as a hotel, but it felt more like student accommodation. Toilets are shared, and in the kitchen you can boil things but aren't allowed to bake. There are passive aggressive notes everywhere telling people to clean up. Adding a little winky face doesn't make those notes feel any less passive aggressive. The owners weren't hospitable, though the cleaning staff were kind.

The breakfast room has amazing views, and the staff were friendly and made me feel welcome. I stayed for two nights. Shops, restaurants and the station are only a short walk away, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The Wi-Fi and shared kitchen were good. I just wish there had been a hair dryer in the room. I'd recommend it.

The host was great and had good hiking suggestions for the area. The place is right in the old city center, with the old castle visible from the garden. There are plenty of nearby restaurants where you can get a feel for the city's Italian side. I'd really recommend staying here in Brig.
