Five stars for the value. The furniture looked faded and dusty, but the bedclothes were clean, which is what matters. There was no AC, though the pleasant August weather made open windows enough for me, unlike my companions. The nymph murals felt very Polly Pocket. The food was middle of the road. My lasagna was just lasagna, while breakfast was better than I’d expected. Music played throughout the hotel, not just in the restaurant, and my evenings came with Enrique Iglesias’ “Hero,” Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street,” and Bob Marley wondering if I could be loved. The host didn’t speak English, but moved easily between Italian, French, and what I think was Dutch. It was comfortable enough that I wasn’t suffering, but odd enough that I wasn’t exactly thriving. Premium purgatory, basically.

The WiFi works well, and the hotel is right by the river in Sierre. Breakfast is simple but good. There’s no air conditioning, which is fine in winter. The church bells next door ring every 30 minutes, and although some people complain about them, they haven’t bothered me.

I was here for five days on a business trip, and the bed was so small I could barely fit. The wireless kept dropping every five minutes, which was frustrating, and breakfast was among the poorest I’ve ever seen. Really disappointing for Switzerland. It gets two stars from me only because it was clean.

The village setting by the river and mountains was beautiful, and my room was comfortable. WiFi was good too. A five-star stay in my book.
