Hotel Europe Davos

The room was a good size and quite modern, and there are some interesting historical pieces inside. I especially liked the elevator with its sofa-like seats. I wish more lifts had seats like that. But the service felt closer to a 3-star hotel, and too many things were handled as take it or leave it, with no follow-up on requests. The pool is warm and was mostly empty, which was nice. The wood boards around it smell, though, and the wall clock showed the wrong time on both visits. You have to sign up to use the sauna. The gym is small, with only a few machines. Restaurant “Scala” served good food, and the staff there were efficient, quick, and friendly. We were on half-board. Breakfast had a good range and the ladies were friendly and efficient, though the coffee wasn’t good. For the first five nights we could choose dishes from a menu, but on the last night we were given a set menu without warning or a chance to keep the previous arrangement. The manager said reception should have told us. They offered some free items to make up for it, but that last impression spoiled things. There were two tea bags on arrival and none added during the stay. The wall note said we should have two coffee sachets, but there was only one from day one and it was never replenished. I asked for a tissue box in the bathroom every day for three days and got only an “ok.” On day three, when a reception team member came to check the TV, I asked again and was told the whole hotel had none. They don’t change sheets or towels unless you ask housekeeping by phone. It would be easier to have a card or door hanger guests could leave on the bed. If linens are being kept in use for environmental reasons, housekeeping could at least spend more time cleaning the bathroom surfaces and floor. The TV hadn’t worked from our first day. On the third day I called staff to show me how to use it, since I was starting to doubt myself, and they confirmed it was broken. They kindly offered us another room, but we declined because a TV wasn’t essential for us. It still should have been checked, or we should have been told at check-in. I won’t return, and this isn’t the place if you expect 4-star service.

The food was tasteless and far too expensive, and the rooms and bathrooms were broken, with burns and mold, as well as a bad smoke smell. Information around the place was wrong too. Worst hotel in Davos. I tried it three times so you don’t have to.

We have an apartment in the Hotel Europe, but when we have visitors we like staying at the hotel. It’s beautifully placed and has a great bar with live music.
