Hotel Engelberg das Trail Hotel

Nadia deserves a special thank you for being such a warm, welcoming hostess. The hotel's service, breakfast, location and welcoming feel were all completely excellent, far beyond what I expected.

Breakfast was really nice, with an outstanding selection of traditional European food, and the price was very reasonable. The attached restaurant, though, was pricey. Be careful, the wait staff may use sweet talk to get a hefty tip from Americans. You may want to carry a little cash instead of asking them to add a percentage to the bill.

We stayed for a week in the middle of Engelberg and had no complaints. The hosts were especially great, always smiling and very friendly.

Nadia welcomed us in such a friendly, personal way when we arrived. She helped with things I needed and pointed us to the places we wanted to go. The hotel is on a quaint, narrow street with mostly foot traffic and little traffic otherwise. It's near the bus station, cable cars, groceries and shops. From there you can enjoy mountain views and watch people strolling below. It's an older, quaint hotel, modern in many areas, and very clean and well maintained. The bed was comfortable, and there was even a foot roller to soothe my feet after our 17-mile hike. We had half board. Dinner was delicious, with generous portions and dessert. Breakfast was amazing too, with fresh local meat and cheese, fruit, nuts and, of course, bread. We're hiking the Via Alpina route, and Thomas, who owns the hotel with Nadia, suggested a beautiful alternative route. It took us higher, with more scenery on the way to Engstlenalp, including gorgeous views of glaciers and three lakes. It was lovely staying at a family-owned hotel run by people who know the area and are active themselves. The couple are engaging and seem passionate about the hotel. They are just wonderful, kind people.
