Alpenlodge Kühboden

Bring plenty of space on your phone or camera, because if you enjoy hiking and relaxing, you’ll want to take loads of photos and videos. It’s a wonderful experience. There’s no grocery store up there, which makes sense given that the place is literally 2000 meters up the mountain. Pick up what you need in the village before heading up.

The friendly employees made my one-night stay pleasant. It’s a handy place to stay when visiting Aletsch Glacier, since you can take the cable car straight to the viewpoint near Eggishorn station.

The room was simple, clean, and quiet, and the crew were flexible, helpful, and very service-oriented. As a solo traveler I found Alpenlodge Kühboden a good-value option, and I’d happily return. Its location is especially practical: the hotel is inside the cable car building and right beside two chairlifts. It was easy to stop by the room during a ski day if I’d forgotten something, and there’s a dedicated place by the rooms for skis and ski boots. The booking included a round trip on the cable car from Fiesh in the valley to Fiesheralp. Breakfast was included too, with a very good buffet and plenty of options. During COVID, I was assigned the same table with my name on it throughout my stay. The hotel restaurant was closed for dinner, but they have an arrangement with the Alpina hotel just opposite, where I had very good rösti.

The family gerat, or family portion, is €40 and comes with a huge plate of chips and frikandellen plus a big jug of squash. It was way too much for four adults and four kids, and pure happiness.
