Auberge de Founex

I ended up booking another hotel at a much higher price, and they also charged me for my first reservation even though the manager had agreed to waive that fee. It all started when I booked a month earlier, got very sick on the way there, and called to explain. He said I wouldn't have to pay. I then booked different dates, but my card was declined twice and that second reservation was cancelled. When I called to ask if I could use another card, he said I'd cancelled on them twice and hung up. I called again to explain that I hadn't cancelled anything, and he hung up a second time. It seemed like they hadn't handled the card properly for the new booking, something that could've been sorted out pretty easily. I travel a lot and have never had a hotel manager end a call on me twice. I'm sorry someone in hospitality would treat a guest this way. I fully meant to stay there and had called to make sure the booking worked, but now I won't go back and I'll tell people I know to avoid this kind of hospitality.

The restaurant feels lively and family run, and locals clearly know it's a good place to eat in Founex. The food was fresh, tasty and sourced locally. Our waitress also knew a lot about the local wines, so if you stay at Auberge de Founex, make sure to try one. It's a lovely little auberge in a picturesque spot, not far from Geneva and the airport. For a business trip, it's a quiet place to stay a little outside town. The staff were friendly and capable, and I can't recommend it enough.

We came for lunch, not an overnight stay, and ate outside on a sunny day. The chase came with all the trimmings, including pear, apple, Brussels red cabbage, little chestnuts in honey and fresh homemade spatasli. It was perfect. At 34 francs, the price was reasonable for Switzerland. I'd strongly recommend the restaurant.

I like that this place still feels like a proper auberge. You can get good local food at a fair price in a wonderful setting, and it's a friendly spot where ordinary people can eat, drink and meet without spending a fortune. So many auberges around here have been taken over and turned into refined places serving fancy, overpriced dishes. That's not what an auberge should be, and this one still gets it right.
