Happy Inn Lodge

Music from the pub downstairs was loud enough that the bass shook the beds until midnight. The listing’s description of cooking facilities is misleading: the so-called kitchen has a fridge and microwave, but no stove, cookware, or proper setup for cooking. The hostel itself was clean and pleasant, and my stay was okay apart from those issues.

The lodge is in a great spot, close to the train station and surrounded by groceries and places to eat. It’s a good option for a budget-conscious group or family, especially since you can book rooms for four. The place is well kept, and the lodge staff and cleaners were nice and decent. I’d steer clear of the bar and restaurant. The negative bar reviews are mostly right, as I found out the hard way. That said, they’re somewhat separate from the lodge, so don’t let them put you off staying there.

We were staying here because our train was cancelled. My son and I could have done without crumbs in the bunk bed. I’m 64 and don’t eat much, and we’re not cheap people, but when I asked if we could share a rack of ribs, which wasn’t an inexpensive snack, they said yes only if we paid a 10 euro table fee. I’d also bought two premium drinks earlier, yet was told a glass of water would cost extra. There was no accommodation for guests staying at the hotel, not even water. Older people in particular should know that. They lost our food business for two days.

The kitchen is basically a sink and kettle, and some of the staff seemed annoyed when we asked for help. The noise was the worst part: a band played in the bar downstairs all three nights, and the music was so loud the bass shook the whole building. We couldn’t sleep. It felt like the staff and owners cared more about the bar customers than the people staying upstairs. This is a bar, not somewhere to sleep. Don’t stay unless you’re deaf.
