Hotel Quellenhof Leukerbad

I book hotels often for both work and leisure, so I'm used to weighing what each place offers and how to make the most of a stay. This review is hard to write, but I feel I should share what happened for other travelers. We had planned a few days around Zermatt in a camping mood and weren't even looking for hotels. As a spontaneous surprise for my girlfriend, I booked one night. The options in Zermatt didn't meet my expectations, so I drove farther out, thinking I'd get more comfort and luxury for a little less. I spent 350 CHF on a suite, excited to surprise her with what I thought would be a full spa and thermal paradise. We were only staying about 20 hours, so we wanted a luxurious, comfortable room and access to a proper spa and thermal area. Instead, the room looked like it came from the 1970s. The decor was horrible, there were two very cheaply built bathrooms with no toiletries, two single beds, a fridge that looked like it hadn't been replaced since the 80s, and electronics at least 20 years old. There was no room service apart from a single bottle of sparkling water. The experience fell far short of the price. I hoped breakfast or the thermal area and spa might improve things, but they didn't. Breakfast was completely average, not great or terrible, and not worth the price. The thermal area was advertised at 30 CHF, so that clearly wasn't what made the room so expensive either. Then the receptionist charged me 20 CHF extra for sauna access, although they gave out a flyer advertising the same service for just 3 CHF. When I politely asked why, the receptionist replied, “You would pay more in Zermatt,” as if that justified it. This was an experience to forget, and one I would never want to repeat.

The rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable, with a balcony outside, though the bathrooms are rather small. The breakfast is average, with no fresh juice and only a limited selection of bread. It's a well located, centrally placed hotel in Leukerbad, and the host family running it are welcoming and service minded.

The room had a lovely rustic feel and was clean, with fresh renovations. We were welcomed by a really hospitable, friendly team, and they even upgraded our room. We had a great stay and would definitely come back.
