The Freddie Mercury Hotel

We were disappointed by our two-night stay. We’d booked a double room and a twin for mum and two daughters, but were put on different floors because the hotel said it couldn’t place a twin and a double on the same level. The room we were given as the twin was set up as a double anyway. There were several maintenance problems: the kettle didn’t work, three of five lights were out, and a hallway bulb flickered the whole time. The vending machine was out of order, and the laundry machines were expensive and didn’t work properly. It felt like there wasn’t much care or upkeep. At checkout, the woman asked about our stay and apologized when I honestly listed the issues I’d reported. The bathroom and shower were nice, and I enjoyed breakfast.

The room was comfortable, clean, and spacious, and the location is excellent, right beside platform 1. You can hear some noise from overnight trains even with the windows closed, but it didn’t disturb my sleep. Given the reasonable price, I couldn’t complain.

I booked two twin rooms, and each had two of everything, including two safes. There were even hooks on the outside of the room doors for regular tenants to hang coats or other things. This is a student hostel for the Hotel Institute of Montreux, not a 3-star hotel, and they conveniently scrub that information from their webpage and Booking.com, where I booked the rooms. Shame on the hotel!

The location was the main draw for us: the hotel is right inside the train station, just a one or two-minute walk after getting off the train. The regular breakfast was fresh and enough, and the service was very good. The rooms were comfortable too. This themed hotel is dedicated to Queen’s lead singer, and all its little corners have a nostalgic feel. If you’re a Queen fan, the recreated scenes may really resonate with you. A memorable stay and a fantastic choice.
