Breakfast was pretty good, with eggs, fresh bread, yogurt, and lots of spreads to choose from. Dinner is raclette, with no alternatives, though there’s a restaurant and grocery store in town if it doesn’t suit your diet or taste. The private rooms for two are spacious, but very dirty, and you shouldn’t count on getting twin beds. In the barn-like building, the bathroom is clean and shared only by its three rooms, so that may be the better option.

We spent a night at Maya Joie on the TMB, and the rooms were cosy and clean. The showers had strong pressure and unlimited hot water, which was great. Dinner was an all-you-can-eat raclette buffet with potatoes, pickles, and salami. Breakfast was good too, with breads, jams, cereal, milk, juice, and more. I accidentally left my shorts behind and couldn’t return for them, but the Maya Joie team kindly mailed them back to me. I only had to pay the postage.

The glacier and mountain views are incredible, and the big windows made them even better. The rooms were the most spacious of anywhere I stayed on the hike, and there was no bad smell. We had raclette for dinner with half-board, and breakfast was delicious. It’s a stunning auberge right on the TMB route, and I’d definitely recommend staying here.

The service was nonexistent, and the food was spectacularly bad. We came with a larger group expecting a hotel, but this is a hostel. They told us to put only what we needed in a plastic bin to take upstairs, saying it was to “avoid” a bed bug problem. I couldn’t see how that was any different from taking our luggage up, but we followed the rule and kept going down two flights whenever we needed anything. By morning we were all covered in bites. I’m glad we hadn’t taken our luggage upstairs after all.

After a hike, that very hot shower felt heavenly. The staff were super friendly, the accommodation was clean and spacious, and both dinner and breakfast were generous. Highly recommended.
