Breakfast was a highlight, with local Poschiavo valley yoghurt, pastries for the handmade jams, eggs, salami and other treats served in a cosy room. The hosts are warm and welcoming, and the rooms feel both spacious and intimate. It’s a charming hotel and bistro in Poschiavo, close to the Italian-Swiss border. We’d gladly stay here while exploring the valley or travelling on the Bernina red train.

The village is well worth an overnight stay, and this clean little hotel is a lovely place to do it. It’s a gem along the Bernina Express route, and I’d absolutely recommend it. Just be aware it sits between two churches whose bells ring as though they’re competing.

The orange juice seemed to come from a bottle or carton rather than being fresh, which was disappointing for a bio-bistro. Also, the cheese was placed right among the salami, which isn’t very considerate for vegetarians.
