After a half day of skiing at Saas grund, I wanted to check out the cafe / restaurant before the next bus 511 arrived. I stood right outside the door for 15 minutes waiting to be seated, while waiters kept walking past me as if I were invisible. The restaurant wasn't busy, with only three tables occupied and more than four waiters. Then a group of white people arrived, and a waiter immediately asked what they needed. I can see two possible differences, race and group size. Whichever was the actual reason, this was definitely discrimination.

I asked to see the drinks menu and was told there wasn’t one for water. They charged 14 CHF for a plastic bottle, about three times what it costs in Zurich, and the bottle on the bill wasn’t even the same one. I told the server and manager I wouldn’t pay more than 5 CHF, since they couldn’t show the item on a menu and I believe charging for it that way is illegal. I said we’d report it to the police. Other reviews suggest I’m not the only customer who feels cheated. This was the biggest scam I’ve experienced, and in Switzerland of all places. Never go to this restaurant!

A good campground for winter. I’m already looking forward to coming back in summer. Thanks!

The location works well, with direct access to the Saas Grund ski area and the bus stop for the Alpin lift in Saas Fee right outside. The rooms are very good for the price, and the serving staff were a bright spot, always friendly. Food was a letdown. Breakfast was the same each morning and didn’t feel like enough fuel for the day, especially without egg whites as a basic option. Dinner tasted like it came entirely from packets, and the portions were too small. The wellness facilities weren’t available because of “electrical problems,” and there was no hospitality or communication about it. The owners came across as distant and unreceptive, as if they lacked the host instinct. It’s a reasonable hotel at a low price, so I understand the stay has limits. But basic hospitality still matters. Serving enough food at dinner and greeting guests with a smile cost nothing. And don’t promise wellness services if you don’t think they’re worth providing.

The service staff were excellent, but communication from the central team could be much better. The owners felt a little distant and didn’t seem open to compliments or proper conversation. Hospitality here follows rather old-fashioned standards. There was also too much meat and too few vegetables for modern Western tastes.
