Moonlight

The setting is stunning, with wonderful walks nearby. Our room and apartment were spacious, quiet, and very clean. The bus stop is right outside the guesthouse, and the host was helpful with excellent advice.

We're here as a group of 25 with the YMCA Stuttgart. Our church cook prepared our meals, though you can cook for yourselves here. We're in room 22 on the second floor, with a great mountain view. The underfloor heating is fantastic.

The hosts were so friendly and accommodating, and took care of all our reasonable requests. Restaurants and ski lifts are an easy walk away. The accommodation is affordable, with simple but perfectly adequate amenities.

On the evening of the celebrations, we got to try Fendamt, an excellent wine from the Valais region. The festivities went on until nightfall, when beautiful fireworks were launched from the surrounding Alpine ridges. In Saas Grund, we got to experience the celebrations marking the unification of the Helvetic Confederation, the foundation for Switzerland. Each year from July 31st to August 1st, the Swiss celebrate this important day with parades and allegorical floats offering white or red wine and sausages. There was a cheerful, sincere feeling about it all. When I said we were Czechs and had come just to have a look, I was told something like, “We appreciate that, and since you're here with us, you're celebrating too, so that's part of it.” I'm not exactly a Czech, but we were quite moved by that.
