Hotel Antika

It's right across from the cemetery where famous climbers who died trying to climb the Matterhorn are buried. The hotel itself is central, close to restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and transport to the ski slopes. Rooms were clean, comfortable, and lovely, with a great included breakfast and a cosy lobby where we could relax.

We were glad to leave. The mattress was so hard that sleeping was difficult, and the customer service was awful. One woman behind the counter wouldn't speak to me until I walked two feet around to the front window. She kept her back to me until I did. Bizarre. She would have made a great camp guard during WWII. We'd hiked from Chamonix to Zermatt, and every other hotel or hut had given us an hour late checkout when we asked. This place wouldn't. I wouldn't recommend it. There are really nice hotels with welcoming staff across the street. Our friends stayed at Hotel Bristol, and its staff and owner were lovely to all of us, even though two of us weren't guests there. Night and day difference.

The large balcony and Matterhorn view made this room fantastic. It was spacious and had a great bathroom, though the bed felt uncomfortably hard, maybe because it was new. We came in summer, but the sauna and spa downstairs make it seem especially suited to winter. I'd definitely stay again during ski season. The room got a little stuffy, and I wish there'd been a fan or a mini fridge for cold drinks. It's about an 8-10 minute walk from the hotel, and they can arrange a taxi if needed. It would also be nice if the breakfast room were set up as a kitchen and dining area with a microwave and hot water machine, since Migros didn't have a microwave. Still, a great Zermatt stay, and I'd choose that same room again.

Our north-facing Standard Double Mountain View rooms, booked through Expedia, didn't have the mountain view we expected. They were clean and comfortable, if a little small. The balcony looked over the mountaineers cemetery and river. It wasn't very private, but it was quiet while we were there. There's no AC, and I would have liked a fan. In mid July, we stayed comfortable by leaving the balcony door or window open. The location was great for walking around town, yet tucked on a side street behind the church, away from restaurant noise late at night. We enjoyed breakfast, especially the machine that made any espresso drink you wanted, and the service staff were attentive.
