Hotel-Garni Plateau Rosa

Great views and very friendly staff at this brilliant hotel. It's a bit out of town, which is great, but still only a 20-minute walk from the station, or you can take the free bus on the green route. Perfect for the Matterhorn gondola, just a 30-second walk away.

I was so glad I picked Plateau-Rosa for my birthday trip. It was just what I wanted, quiet and relaxing, with a great view of the Matterhorn. Pierre greeted me warmly at the front desk and showed me to a bright, tidy room with a large balcony. It's about a 20-minute walk from the train station, though there is a bus. I didn't mind walking and looking around. The hotel is right across from the cable car station, handy for going up to Glacier paradise. There's also a hiking route on the hill across from the hotel, where I took a picture of the hotel. The sauna spa is tiny but very comfortable. I guess I benefited from going in the offseason! Breakfast had great options, especially the different Swiss breads, and the staff there were always kind and helpful. I'd recommend Plateau-Rosa without a doubt if I return to Zermatt or to someone else.

We loved our three nights at Hotel Plateau-Rosa, though we wished we'd stayed longer. The room was beautiful and comfortable, with a great Matterhorn view, and breakfast was included and delicious. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The Glacier Express gondola was just a short walk away, and in the evenings we enjoyed watching it pass from our balcony with wine and snacks. The trail to Z'Mutt was nearby and great. We also hiked the Matterhorn Glacier trail, which was amazing!

We were hoping the views from the clean, south-facing rooms would make up for the downsides, but the Matterhorn was covered by clouds throughout our stay. The hotel offers a quiet break from Zermatt's busy town centre, though it's a good 15-20 minutes' walk away. Don't believe the reception desk when they say it's eight minutes. There is no hotel shuttle. If you don't want to drag luggage for 20 minutes, you can take the public bus to the Glacier Paradise stop, use the elevator to the next level, then haul bags another 100 meters to the hotel, or pay about 30 CHF each way for a taxi. We took the taxi for convenience and spent 60 CHF. I regret leaving my wallet in the room for the day without putting up a sign asking housekeeping to skip it. After checking out yesterday, I found a charge from "Rail Ninja" on one of my credit cards that I didn't make. I immediately cancelled all the cards in my wallet. I'm incredibly upset, but feel it's pointless to take it up with the hotel, so I'm leaving this review. In room #4, the bathroom fan was excruciatingly loud and came on when the bathroom light was switched on. I told the hotel and was told, "the owner knows about it..." No remedy was offered. I wouldn't return or recommend staying here.
