Hotel Schwarzsee

The location is unbeatable, with stunning views. Dinner was delicious, and getting to ski the slopes in the morning before anyone else was on the track was a rare treat.

Right beside the cable car station, this basic hotel was a welcome, much-needed rest after hiking around Matterhorn. There’s a sink in the room, while the shared bathroom was clean and available. The on-site restaurant was good. Half-board dinner let you pick from a few menu options, and the soup was excellent. Breakfast was good too, with plenty to choose from.

The sunrise was a highlight: early in the morning, the light put a spotlight on the Matterhorn. The view from Hotel Schwarzsee is breathtaking, and it’s a handy base if you want to hike up to Hörnli Hütte early. We took the Gondola to Schwarzsee and stayed overnight. The basic rooms were cozy and comfortable, and breakfast and dinner were included in the price. The staff were friendly and kind. Damian was especially cheerful and thoughtful, giving us a table with a good view and making sure we had coffee early in the morning. We enjoyed our stay and hope to return. It’s also a great place to come just for lunch. We love it here! PS: The Rösti could use an upgrade!

Getting the first freshly groomed tracks in the morning, before the lifts started, was so satisfying. The views are stunning, and our window looked toward the town of Zermatt, all lit up at night. For skiers, this is an ideal spot, and I’d definitely book here again. It’s an experience you won’t forget. At 2600m, the room was decent: ours had two bunk beds, a couple of shelves, and a sink. Skis and boots go in the ski room below the rooms. The shared bathroom and shower could be inconvenient, though they were very uncrowded during our stay, and the shower pressure was great. Dinner is a fixed menu, tasty but with slightly small portions. Breakfast was very solid. The restaurant serves dinner from 6:30pm and breakfast from 7:30am, and checkout is by 10:00am.
