La Couronne Hotel & Spa

The hotel’s breakfast was a lovely start to each day, with plenty of choices and a glass-roofed dining room that had a beautiful view when the weather allowed. I also appreciated the thoughtful extras in my room, including a complimentary backpack. The whole place was tastefully decorated, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The weather during my three nights wasn’t great, so the Matterhorn stayed hidden in thick clouds most of the time. I caught just one glimpse from the balcony one evening while eating cup noodles, and missed out on the famous golden sunrise. At least that gave me more time to enjoy the hotel, spa, and pool. Getting there was easy. Communication with La Couronne beforehand went smoothly, and once I sent my train schedule, the free shuttle was waiting when I stepped out of Zermatt train station. I used it again when checking out. Highly recommended.

The staff were warm and attentive throughout our stay, and the afternoon tea with pastries was such a nice touch. Breakfast was consistently delicious, with fresh food, lots of choices, excellent coffee, and breathtaking views from the dining area. We slept very comfortably in the spacious rooms, and the practical bathrooms were well equipped. The separated mattress and lack of traditional top sheets seemed unusual at first, but we had no complaints about the bed. The duvet was so good I want one at home. I only wish we could connect Netflix or mirror a phone to the TV. The spa has a sauna, infrared room, cold room at -10º, and indoor and outdoor pools. The pools were fine, though a little more warmth would make them perfect. We also liked being able to rent ski equipment at the hotel and keep everything in the ski room lockers. Our whole stay in Zermatt was wonderful, and we’d absolutely come back.

The location made getting around town easy, and the ski shuttle stop is practically outside. There’s a small grocery store and bakery across the street, while the larger Coop is about a 10-minute walk away. The complimentary ride to and from the train station was a nice inclusion, and the ski lockers were a bonus. Breakfast had plenty to choose from, and they’ll make an omelette or fried eggs if you ask. The spa was gorgeous. I’d only suggest making the outdoor pool and indoor hot tub warmer. If you use one of the electric taxis, be aware it costs $30 for a couple of minutes to the ski lifts, though that’s not the hotel’s doing. We had a perfect stay and would definitely return. If your budget allows, get a balcony room with a Matterhorn view. Highly recommend.

The staff were brilliant, and the spa was amazing. I had a spotless room with a view of the Matterhorn, and the location overlooking the river was perfect. Breakfast was amazing too. I had a wonderful stay.
