Restaurant - Hotel Sonnmatten

We had one of the best Ceviche in town here, and the service was very friendly. It’s a very nice restaurant, especially the outstanding terrace overlooking the Matterhorn. I’d definitely recommend it.

My husband’s allergy was handled very thoughtfully, and the service was great. The food was delicious. He had the schnitzel, cooked perfectly with that pillowy crust a good schnitzel should have. I had steak topped with duck liver terrine and white truffle. Honestly, to die for. I asked for medium rare and it came exactly that way, with loads of flavor.

We had such a sweet stay here during our honeymoon. The restaurant was adorable and the food was great, and they brought croissants every morning. Our cozy, spacious room had windows with lovely views from both the bedroom and bathroom. It’s also in a nice spot close to the matterhorn.

I’ve never written a review before, but I’m very concerned about how our allergy was handled. We told the restaurant several times, including in multiple emails and again when dinner began, that someone in our party had a severe nut intolerance. The food was fine, though we had to ask whether the dishes brought to the table contained nuts. Then dessert arrived as part of our set menu, with several pots and no allergy warning. When I asked the waitress if they contained nuts, she said they didn’t. My partner ate half a pot before she returned to say it had hazelnuts, which cause his worst reactions. His throat and lips started swelling and itching, and we had to find medication. Nobody apologized or acknowledged any mistake. I’ve never been so unimpressed by service or so worried for my partner’s safety. If staff aren’t completely sure what a dish contains, they should say they don’t know.
