Hotel Casablanca Spa & Wine

What a shame, because it's a genuinely beautiful old building. The rooms are huge, with lots of wood, and it was nice and quiet. But the place badly needs a facelift. Pipes are exposed in the bathrooms, the showerhead was falling apart, and there are exposed cables running along the breakfast room walls.

The front desk staff were great whenever they were around, and the restaurant staff were good too, even with us as the only guests there. The food was okay, though it didn't seem freshly made, perhaps because so few people were eating there when we visited in September. The rooms felt a bit worn and dated, and it was freezing.

Hotel Casablanca has lovely, welcoming common areas, the two pools were well maintained when I was there, the staff were wonderful, and the food was amazing. I'd consider returning if the owners cared enough to update the rooms. Inside the room, there was no way to control the temperature, and we had to improvise a window prop. Leaving the windows open lets insects in. The decor looks stuck in 1993. A small, uncovered fridge sat in a random spot on the floor, and there were loose desk lamps despite there being no desk. The room hadn't been prepared: no toilet paper, shaving kit, or bath and shower soap, and nowhere to put soap in the shower except the floor. The bathroom had a lingering unpleasant smell, and insect husks were scattered across the floor. The shower temperature changed drastically and the water pressure was very low. Wi-Fi was unreliable on standard 2.4 GHz, and there were no USB charging ports. The door was supposedly secured with a physical skeleton key attached to a cork. Breakfast felt like leftovers from a better hotel, and the coffee could pass for tea. When looking at five-star reviews, notice whether the reviewer is listed as a tour guide. They sometimes get a kickback for recommendations.

The pool and terrace look nice, and the room was in good condition even though it felt a little old. The restaurant was good, nothing special, and breakfast was okay but could use a bit more, in my opinion. There's an industrial area nearby, so trucks go by during the day. It didn't bother me, but keep in mind it's not especially quiet.
