The care that has gone into restoring and maintaining this place feels like a real labour of love. It’s one of the few buildings left from the original German colony in southern Chile, and it has a lot of charm. German influence in South America matters globally, and more should be done to preserve it. That history has been gradually fading, so keeping places like this standing is vital. To me, it’s a much milder, more positive legacy than the egregious imperialism of Britain, France, or Belgium.

We had a lovely garden to enjoy, and the staff were excellent. The historic mansion itself is beautiful, though some of the architecture was awkward: the sloping ceiling meant ducking to reach the bathroom, and the floors creaked. Our room had just one bathroom for four adults, and getting to it meant crossing through one person's room while they were asleep. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious, but when two of us came down to our table for four first, the two who arrived later forgot to bring us scrambled eggs.
