The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, and I appreciate their hospitality. Still, I have to be honest about the value. At 80K CLP, I expected more, especially compared with other places I stayed in Chile at both lower and higher prices. The room was old and not great. There were bugs on the bathroom walls, and when the heat didn’t work we were given a tiny plug-in heater. It used the room’s only outlet apart from two behind the pillows, which we couldn’t use to charge our phones overnight. They had run out of shampoo and gave us a tiny amount, enough for one person. The shower gel was the hand soap from the sink. Breakfast was very basic. For two people, we got one portion of scrambled egg.

The restaurant was a bright spot: the food and service were very good, and it may be the best place to eat in town. The Hosteria Rio Grande is also well located in Futaleufu, and the staff are very friendly. The accommodation itself was grubby, though. The cleaning staff seemed to do their best, but maintenance was poor. When we arrived the heating didn’t work, and the shower curtain and rod were lying in the bathtub. The place looked tacky overall, and we were disappointed even allowing for its “3.7 star” rating. There are better and cheaper options in Futaleufu.

For a small border town, this is such a great place. The rooms are lovely, with en suite bathrooms, gas heaters, and personal towels. There’s also a lounge, cafe, and restaurant area. I’ll definitely come back!
