The garden is lovely when the weather’s nice, and the location is great. But Chili Kiwi Hostel seems past its best. We stayed in April, and most of the volunteers weren’t especially friendly, though two were exceptions. At the bar, the volunteers were drinking and didn’t acknowledge us, so we felt like we’d wandered into their party. The outdoor area is poorly equipped for the number of people using it: only four tea cups, too little cutlery, and defective pans. The bathrooms and toilets were okay, but the kitchen was terrible. In our nine-bed room, three beds were stacked on top of one another, leaving no room to sit.

The hostel is right on the lake, and the bar’s happy hour was a nice place to meet people and watch the sunset. It feels cozy and homey, the beds are comfortable and sturdy, and they light a much-appreciated fire every morning and evening. They also offer different tours and explain the options. My one small complaint is that with most staff being volunteers, service can be lacking. Coffee and sugar weren’t restocked, things were left out, and reception or the bar could be unattended when needed because staff were chatting elsewhere in the common areas.

In winter, it’s lovely to curl up with a book by the fireplace. The outdoor kitchen was our favorite, since it was well equipped and gave us a quiet spot to relax. This hostel is right by the lake, with friendly staff, clean bathrooms, and cold draft beer. They can help book tours, share information about nearby hikes, and rent out kayaks.

UPDATE: The hostel has new owners and will be called Soley Hostel, so look for that when booking. The new owners are locals and seem really motivated to improve the place and make it special. The vibe already feels completely different from the reviews here that say it’s a bit run down.

The garden has a great view, and you can watch the sunset each evening. The volunteers gave good recommendations for things to do in and around Pucón. The beds are cozy, the bathrooms are clean, and there’s enough space to cook and keep groceries in the fridge.
